Discover the rare decay of elementary particles at the Large Hadron Collider could researchers from Moscow State University and their colleagues working in the part of the CMS collaboration and LHCb. What lies beyond the Standard Model, and that will be looking at the collider, says science department “Gazety.Ru”.
The Large Hadron Collider was “doing nothing” in February of 2013. During this time he managed to modernize, and in June 2015 are expected the first collisions at high energies. However, during these two years the researchers continued their investigations, based on the received data to stop the collider. No exception, and representatives of the CMS collaboration, and LHCb, which continued to analyze the obtained data from experiments and publish articles on their results.
Researchers from the Moscow State University named after MV University participate in both experiments. The authors sheet LHCb are five people working in the Moscow State University, and CMS – fifteen.
They participated in work on the article, published in one of the most prestigious scientific journal Nature, which talks about the decay of B-mesons (B 0 s ) at the mu-mu and plus or minus a couple of (μ + μ – ). According to the Standard Model, such decay occurs in four cases per billion, but to fix it before it was not possible.
«This is a very rare decay, and find it not so easy. And in this case the representatives of CMS and LHCb experiments were conducted independently of one another and then processed the data and found that the collapse “, – said Victor Savrin, deputy director of the Research Institute of Nuclear Physics of the DV Skobel’tsyn Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov Moscow State University, a member of the CERN collaboration CMS.
According to Victor Savrin, this is a very important achievement because detect such rare decays and their parameters can be measured only in exceptional experiments that can be carried out only at the Large Hadron Collider.
Such findings give researchers a base for exploration beyond the limits of the Standard Model.
«If the decay is detected and fixed, it takes us beyond the Standard Model and allows us to assume that we will be able to fix the processes that lie outside it”, – Victor Savrin sure.
Scientists hope that after the Large Hadron Collider at full capacity, they will be able to make new discoveries and permanently close a number of controversial issues related to the theories, not yet confirmed nor disproved experimentally. In particular, the researchers plan to focus on the detection of particles forming dark matter and dark energy, which make up 95% of the total mass of the universe.
At the same time, Russia should become an associate member of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) before the end of 2015. Told “Gazety.Ru» told , Minister of Education and Science of Russia Dmitry Livanov, noting that for several months the procedure will be brought to an end, and the association agreement will be signed.
