Two new elements of the periodic table have Russian roots – Popular Mechanics

Research group of pioneers offered to them the following names:

113th member – Nihon (Nihonium ) symbol Nh 115th member – Muscovy (Moscovium), symbol Mc 117th member – Tennessin (Tennessine), symbol Ts 118-th element – Oganesson (Oganesson), Og symbol Until November 8, 2016, these names are considered to be recommended by the department of inorganic chemistry, IUPAC. They will be at the public hearing, after which the Council will take a formal IUPAC names such as official.

The new elements were added to the periodic table in the January 2016 decision of the IUPAC. Atoms with charges kernel 113,115,117 and 118 were obtained artificially by bombardment of heavy nuclei, the nuclei of other atoms. Priority in the selection of names for the 113 member belonged to the Japan Institute of the RIKEN, 115, 117 and 118 items were discovered together Russian-American group of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (JINR), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California (LLNL) and the National Laboratory of Oak Ridge Tennessee (ORNL).

Muscovy got its name in honor of the Moscow region. Oganesson – in honor of Yuri Ts Oganesyan, head of the scientific laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, co-discoverer of the periodic system of elements 104-107. Tennessin named in honor of Tennessee, where the ORNL. Nihon -. The first of the elements, whose name is associated with Japan
