“God Particle” Found in Stockholm

Yesterday in Stockholm were announced winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2013. They were the two professors – Francois Engler (Free University of Brussels) and Peter Higgs (University of Edinburgh). The award was given for the “theoretical prediction mechanism that helps us to understand the origin of the mass of subatomic particles, whose existence was proven discovery of an elementary particle predicted in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN».
The solution is, apparently, was given the Nobel committee is not easy. Rare event in the history of the Nobel Prizes – Members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences pushed back the announcement of the winners is more than an hour. And it’s probably not the most contentious issues. For example, in the article “What’s your name now, the Higgs boson?” (See “NG-science” of 06/26/13) the names of the current Nobel laureates have been confidently predicted. Chances are experts deciding whether to divide the prize for two or three people. Besides, the current winners – the Europeans. Yet we know what a huge impact the American Physical Society. Nobel winners get to without his “knowledge” few managed in recent years.
But other unofficial Nobel tradition was not broken: award two or three researchers. Science has long been transformed from a country of employment of single-enthusiasts in the process involving large research teams. Suffice it to say that scientific articles in the field of accelerator physics often have dozens or even hundreds of collaborators!
In 1964, Peter Higgs theorized the existence of particles called later in his honor – the Higgs boson, which gives mass of all other elementary particles. That is actually a particle that makes our world a reality. No wonder the other name for the Higgs boson – “God particle.” Regardless of the Higgs to the same theoretical conclusions were reached and Francois Engler. This story has a beautiful outcome. In July 2012, scientists at CERN announced that they have found the Higgs boson as a result of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. AV
