Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 “contraband” brought it to Jupiter water – it support the findings of the space observatory “Herschel,” said French astrophysics. According to them, the water vapor formed in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter after a collision with a comet, which happened almost 20 years ago.
In 1995, scientists have recorded a large amount of water vapor in the Jovian stratosphere, their very surprised. After all, the water could not get up from the lower layers, as would not overcome the “cold trap” at the upper troposphere. Therefore, experts immediately came to believe that the liquid enters from the outside, but the main “suspect” this was the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. More than 20 of its debris fell in the southern hemisphere of Jupiter in July 1994. However, scientists did not have evidence to support this assumption, as long as they have not received updated information from the “Herschel”.
According to astronomers in the southern hemisphere in the stratosphere is 2-3 times more water than in the north, with the highest concentration of registered here in the fall of comets, RIA Novosti reported. “According to estimates, about 95 percent of the water in the stratosphere associated with the comet impact,” – said Tybalt Cavalli from the Laboratory of Astrophysics in Bordeaux.
