National Aerospace Agency (NASA) has invested 125,000 U.S. dollars in the development of a prototype 3D-printer to print food, according to Russia Today. Grant got the company Systems & Materials Research Corporation, which has to cope with the problem for six months.
Development is designed, first and foremost, on the astronauts, as the technology that is used in the “food printer” provides a very economical use of ingredients. The main components of which are “printed” food – that oil and carbohydrates in powder form.
composition of food is scheduled to make as simple as possible to reduce the amount of waste, but in order to print some dish would require removable cartridges, filled the necessary ingredients. Their shelf life is expected to be significantly greater than that of conventional products.
According to Anjana Contractor representative Systems & Materials Research Corporation, food stored in cartridges will be suitable for use in a long time – up to 15 years. “Long-term space travel dictate the rules for storage of food,” – he said.
