Mars have found traces of an ancient freshwater lake. In it, scientists believe life could exist. It is reported channel Euronews. This conclusion scientists came when analyzed data from the Mars rover Curiosity. They believe that the crater Gale 3.5 billion years ago was one such lake. And there have been all the conditions for life – carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur.
This lake may have existed for a long time – tens and even hundreds of thousands of years. In addition, the scientists were able to calculate the approximate temperature of the water and the fact that in this lake flows into the river.
All this became known, based on studies of sediment at the bottom of the lake possible. At the same rocks and soils collected on a number of parameters resembled those samples that were collected at the bottom of rivers in the world. These data were officially presented at the Geophysical Congress in the United States and published in the journal Science. Scientists believe that water on Mars was filled with various chemical and mineral elements.
“If we took the microorganisms from Earth and placed on Wednesday found the lake, they would be able to survive? answer – yes,” – said the head of the mission Curiosity John Grottsinger.
Recall rover Curiosity arrived on Mars August 6, 2012. His research – Gale crater. The rover should go from 5 to 20 kilometers and analysis of soil and atmosphere on Mars. On the planet he will stay 686 days, exactly one Martian year. The project cost is $ 2.5 billion.
