Team of researchers from the research of the automatic station “Mars Science Laboratory” analyzed sediments taken in the crater Gale near the equator of the Red Planet.
These mud stones showed that the lake with a mountain in the center existed, at least about 3.6 billion years ago. Scientists believe that the lake could face dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of years.
analysis showed that the lake was calm and probably freshwater, contained a key biological elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur.
“Importantly, we found no signs of life on Mars. We found that in the crater Gale was a lake, in which billions of years ago may have existed microbes. This is a huge step forward for Mars exploration . interesting to think that billions of years ago there was microbial life, transforming a rich set of trace elements into energy. We will study in greater detail the surface of the crater, and maybe learn answer to the mystery: was there life on Mars? “- said Professor Sanjeev Gupta, from Imperial College London and author of the study.
