It launched the first test unit project on mining in space – 3DNews

The company Planetary Resources reported that the experimental apparatus Arkyd 3 Reflight (A3R) successfully cleared with the International Space Station (ISS) and begins testing of onboard systems.

Recall that Planetary Resources is the author of an ambitious project for the extraction of minerals from the bowels of the asteroid. First of all, we are talking about platinum, iridium and rhodium. As planned by the company’s huge reserves of these resources in space will allow to receive an impressive profits despite the high costs associated with research, the launch of specialized delivery vehicles and minerals on Earth.

The original machine A3R was to be delivered to the ISS in the last year, but it destroyed the rocket explosion Antares. The second copy arrived at the space station in April of 2015 on board the SpaceX Falcon 9.

Mission A3R designed for three months. During this time, the basic system will be tested, in particular, aerospace electronics, controls and onboard software.

Later this year, will launch a larger device Arkyd-6 (A6), which is planned to test the stabilization system position in space and power management, communications, and specialized sensors.

In the future tested technology and components will be used as part of the Space Telescope Arkyd 100, the identification of which would be most suitable for the development of asteroids. Actually mining in space begin no earlier than the 30s.
