It is difficult to long time to keep a secret conspiracy, scientists say, because sooner or later, one of the conspirators sure about it tell.
Employees Oxford University conducted a study on how long can stay in the conspiracy to the moment when one of their members, either intentionally or accidentally, do not let it slip.
The physicist David Grimes brought a mathematical formula that describes this process. It is based on three main factors: the amount of the conspirators, held since the organization of the plot and time laid down in this plot the probability of failure.
The scientist used his formula to the four famous conspiracy theories: the allegation that the Americans staged landing on Moon, the belief that the statements about global warming – is a fraud, the theory that vaccines cause autism, and yet another “conspiracy theory” that the pharmaceutical companies are allegedly hiding the existing treatment of cancer.
Analysis David Grimes showed that if indeed in all of these cases, there were conspiracies to defraud the people most likely they would have been disclosed.
For example, a “re-enactment” landing on the moon could remain secret only 3 7 years.
Scam global warming is able to hold between 3.7 and 26.8 years.
“Conspiracy” about the vaccine causes autism would have lasted from 3.2 to 34, 8 years old, and “cancer conspiracy” existed to just 3.2 years.
“Mathematical methods used in this study are quite similar to those that I had applied in my academic studies in the field of radiation,” – says David Grimes.
His work is published in the journal Plos .
Create a formula
To display a formula, Grimes began with the Poisson distribution, the well-known statistical tool that measures the probability of a particular event in a certain period of time.
Assuming a number of assumptions in conjunction with the method of mathematical deduction, scientists have deduced the general, albeit incomplete formula.
In particular, it could not assess the probability of failure of internal conspiracy. To define it, Grimes analyzed data from three real-life stories in which there were a conspiracy or agreement.
The first was the program of surveillance of the population, called PRISM, which led the US National Security Agency. The program was attended by 36 thousand people about it has learned in six years thanks to Edward Snowden.
The second was infamous in the US experiment in Alabama to study the development of the body of syphilis, in which it infected participants in the African-American of origin did not receive the necessary treatment.
In the experiment, which lasted from 1932 to 1972, was attended by about 6700 people. He told about it 25 years later Dr. Peter Bakstan.
The third row is connected with the authorities carefully conceal information that criminological examination of the FBI has long been the unscientific and often erroneous. As a result, prison sentences and capital punishment were sentenced innocent people. This told Dr. Frederick Whitehurst.
According to David Grimes, in this conspiracy involved up to 500 people. It took six years to the secret is out.
The formula, they deduced, it suggests the most optimistic scenario for the conspirators option: researcher admits that they know how to keep his mouth shut, and that at this time there are any being or external investigation can go to intruders.
“Plausible inferences”
Using data from the three known cases, Grimes came to the conclusion that the original probability of failure for internal reasons is four in a million.
This is a very low figure, but the chances that the plot will be revealed eventually become quite high in proportion as he’s joined by all new members.
For example, the conspiracy theories that Americans do not really landed on the moon, and removed all this in a special studio there in 1965. In concealing the truth were to participate 411 000 employees of NASA. In this situation, says Grimes, a conspiracy would have lasted no more than 3.7 years.
From the moment of landing Americans on the moon has been more than 50 years, so, according to the formula Grimes, there is every reason to believe that this was a landing real.
A mathematician at the University of Washington Professor Monti McGovern says that the research methods seem to him reasonable guidelines, and calculate the probability of – believable.
“I think it is difficult, if not impossible, to dissuade those who are convinced of something. But I hope that this work will be useful for anyone that takes a moderate position and is able to wonder whether it is possible conspiracy that never disclosed, “- says David Grimes.
