Found biological causes of schizophrenia – REGNUM

Washington, January 28, 2016, 20:38 – REGNUM Scientists at Harvard Medical School reported finding a gene clearly associated with the emergence and development of schizophrenia, reported in the journal Nature.

Researchers from the US found in schizophrenics gene variant, the impact of which explains the phenomenon of schizophrenia.

There was a database on 65 thousand people from 30 countries and began the search for gene mutations with strong ties with schizophrenia. One of the candidates was the gene variant C4.

C4 is used by the body to remove excess connections in the brain. Most intensively this happens during puberty. The main symptoms of schizophrenia begin to manifest it in adolescence.

Experiments on mice have shown that increased expression of C4 increases the likelihood of schizophrenia. The new discovery enables physicians to hope for a more effective drugs for the treatment and even prevention of schizophrenia, whereas existing drugs are aimed at relief of symptoms – delusions and hallucinations.

All the previous attempts of scientists to find the genetic basis of schizophrenia ended in to no avail.
