Washington, January 22, 2016, 12:00 – REGNUM tectonic movements on the Earth emerged 3 billion years ago. Age of the planet then was 1.5 billion years old. This is the conclusion of geophysics at the University of Maryland (USA), conducted new research, reported portal «EurekAlert!» Referring to the publication in the journal Science.

Clarifies that previously geophysics has a different opinion. Some scientists thought that tectonic movement in the world began much earlier – shortly after the formation of the planet. A study conducted at the University, included several stages. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed of rocks of different age and determined the content of isotopes of nickel, cobalt, chromium and zinc.

On the basis of comparison of the concentrations of these metals with concentrations of magnesium, researchers have identified the time, when the tectonic movement in the world.
