Sahara appeared earlier than previously thought

Specialists Norwegian Centre for Climate Research in Bergen was offered a new version of the origin of the Sahara desert. The results of their research they published in the journal Nature.

Scientists conducted a new modeling the Earth’s climate and came to the conclusion that the Sahara was formed in place existed in the Mesozoic era of the ancient Tethys Ocean. According to scientists, the ocean began to disappear 7-11 million years ago, weakening the African monsoon, shifting the flow of moisture from the tropical Atlantic further south. Tethys completely disappeared some 5 million years ago, but the sands of the Sahara, which may seem endless, show that the desert is not likely formed 2-3 million years ago, as previously thought, and about 7 million years ago.

Earlier, American scientists have discovered similarities soil of Mars and Earth.
