Baikal level has fallen below the minimum mark – Sight

Head of Hydromet Alexander Frolov said that the water level in Lake Baikal due to shortage of water fell even one centimeter and gone beyond the minimum mark of 456.0 meters.

February 19 representative of Ministry of Russia reported that uUroven water in Lake Baikal decreased by one centimeter due shortage of water and reached its lowest level in 456.0 meters.

Currently, limits Baikal limited requirements of the Government of Russia from March 26, 2001 № 234. The document set a minimum acceptable level of water in the 456.0 meters, the maximum – 457.0 meters.

Baikal – one of the great lakes on the planet, the lake “superlatives”: the deepest (1 thousand. 637 meters), the oldest (25 million years), with the most diverse flora and fauna including freshwater bodies.

The lake has a unique volume and quality supply of fresh water (23.6 thousand. cubic kilometers – more 20% of world reserves). In 1996, the pond was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
