The Russian carrier rocket “Proton-M” led the British telecommunications satellite Inmarsat 5F-2 on the target orbit. This is representative of the Russian Federal Space Agency told RIA Novosti on Monday morning.
“Proton-M” was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Sunday afternoon. This launch is the first in Russia in 2015 and 402nd in the history of flight of the launch vehicle.
Inmarsat 5F-2 – the second of three Inmarsat satellites fifth generation (I-5) – is designed to provide communication services in North and South America and the Atlantic. The first of the satellites of I-5 was successfully launched with the help of “Proton-M” in December 2013.
The contract for the launch of Inmarsat 5F2 with a starting weight of about six tonnes using the “Proton-M” concluded Russo American joint venture ILS – International Launch Services Inc. (Reston, United States). Controlling stake in ILS belongs Space Center Khrunichev – developer and manufacturer of “Proton” and the upper stage “Breeze-M”, as well as long-term space rocket complex “Angara”.
