Atlantic storm led to abnormally warm weather at the North Pole – RBC

A powerful cyclone, the one that caused the tornadoes and devastating river floods in the United States, led to anomalous warming in the North Pole, writes The Washington Post.

On Wednesday morning, December 30, the temperature in the vast territory around the North Pole is at the level between 30 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1.11 to plus 1.67 degrees Celsius).

Data International Arctic Programme confirmed that the temperature near the North Pole was superior to the zero mark . Thus, the buoy at latitude 87.45 degrees recorded temperature of 0.7 degrees Celsius. The area around the North Pole on December 30 was as warm as in Chicago and a few degrees warmer than in most parts of the US Midwest.

Meanwhile, in countries around the North Atlantic, the powerful winds caused huge coastal waves. In the UK, rainfall led to the exit of the river banks and washing away bridges. This December was a record in the number of rainfall in some parts of the United Kingdom.
