The archaeologists from the United States and Mexico have identified the most likely origin of the human victims on the pyramid of Huitzilopochtli – places of worship of the ancient Aztec empire. The study is published in the journal Current Anthropology, briefly about it informs Daily Mail.
The archaeologists studied the skulls of human victims 38 times Axayacatl Emperor, of which eight belong to adult men, aged between 30 and 45 years old and have been modified. In ancient times, before the ritual murder on the faces of the people wore masks. By their nature, scientists have tried to determine the origin of the victims of the atrocities of the Aztec people. Total scientists presented an analysis of eight of these masks.
The archaeologists have compared these with those masks on the faces of the other 127 people killed in Tenochtitlan, most of whom were soldiers. Scientists have determined the age, gender, possible diseases and social affiliation of these people, and identified ways in which have been made the victims of masks.

According to the study researchers, most of the victims were either of those lands the elite warriors, or representatives of the local gentry, who took the side of the enemy. The skulls and masks were discovered about 30 years ago, but by now it was clear their origin.

Pyramid of Huitzilopochtli (Templo Mayor) is a complex of temple buildings in the capital of the Aztec Tenochtitlan. The height of the pyramid was 60 meters, on top of a temple of the sun god Huitzilopochtli and the war, as well as the god of rain and fertility, Tlaloc.
The pyramid was built in about 1325, and two hundred years later became the religious center of the Aztec state. Templo Mayor Most of the complex was looted and destroyed by Spanish invaders in 1521. To date, we remain of the bottom of Huitzilopochtli, whose excavations, archaeologists are engaged.
