Japanese scientist killed himself because of the scientific scandal – to Pravda.Ru

One of Japan’s leading research scientists committed suicide. 52-year-old Yoshiki Sasai was co-author of controversial works on stem cells. And also, he was Deputy Director of the Centre of biological development of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN, Kobe), reports Lenta.ru.

He was one of the authors of a study published in January in the journal Nature. In two studies, setting out “sensational results”, stated that scientists were able to create a revolutionary method of obtaining stem cells by placing them in an acidic environment.

Articles provoked widespread discussion and a wave of criticism. There are reports of forgery: PR office RIKEN launched test results with independent experts from other academic institutions. They found signs of fraud in publications drawings and use the same image twice. In June, a scientific commission to investigate the scandal demanded punishment for Obakata and its leaders, including Sasai. Biological Center in Kobe was proposed to disband.

Despite a wave of criticism, lead author of the study Obokata continued to insist that the errors in the drawings have been made inadvertently and that it does not change the main result.

Yoshiki Sasai was found the morning of August 5 guards hanged on a string in the building RIKEN center in Kobe. In the suicide note, the scientist says that feels a sense of shame and regret and apologizes for these works.
