The ozone hole will disappear by the end of the century – Utro.Ru

NASA experts have voiced two pieces of news related to the state of the Earth’s atmosphere: good and bad. The good: the hole in the ozone layer is shrinking. The bad: worldwide levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached horrific quantities.

The NASA report says that the ozone layer is starting to recover. Most of the ozone hole, the area of which currently stands at 12 million square miles, over the next 30 years decreases to 8 million square miles, and by the end of the century could disappear altogether.

The ozone layer Earth’s atmosphere protects all living beings from the deadly ultraviolet radiation of the sun. Because industrial emissions, primarily gases CFCs, in the second half of the last century began to break down the ozone layer. As a result, by the mid-1980s. over the Antarctic ozone hole was formed huge (in the polar regions, ozone is rapidly destroyed due to the extremely low temperatures).

In 1987 he was signed by the international Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It entered into force two years later, and since then the emissions of CFCs into the atmosphere began to decline.

In 2006, it became known that the ozone hole over Antarctica has ceased to grow. Then sounded the assumption that it will be tightened completely by 2060.
