US almost started a nuclear war against the USSR due to solar flares – Rosbalt.RU

Scientists and retired US Air Force officers told about the prevention of World War III, which could lead to happen due to a solar storm radar equipment failure.

As the journal Space Weather writes these events took place May 23, 1967. Then the US Air Force had lost radio contact with radars in the Arctic Circle. Having decided that the reason for this action was the Soviet side, the military prepared for the launch of several aircraft in the direction of the Soviet Union.

Aircraft did not have to use as military time gained data to meteorologists, indicating a powerful solar flare, which was enough to remove the radar equipment failure. This prevented the conflict that could escalate into a world war involving nuclear weapons.

A small group of sunspots on the Sun discovered May 18, 1967 Observatory in New Mexico and Colorado. Active star rose sharply by 23 May. Then Observatory in Massachusetts has recorded a powerful radio waves emanating from the sun. Geomagnetic storm on Earth lasted about 40 hours, which resulted in the conclusion of the three standing radar (Alaska, Greenland, and in the UK).
