MSU opened one of the world’s best observatories – Russian newspaper

Caucasian Mountain Observatory of Moscow State University was opened today at the plateau in Shatzhatmaz Malokarachayevsky District Karachay-Cherkess Republic, reports Tass.

According to the rector of the Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy, the station will be one of the best in its class .

The first images of galaxies and nebulae, obtained in tests of the telescope, have already been put into print and very will soon be published in scientific journals, the director of the State Astronomical Institute of the Sternberg Andrew Cherepashchuk.

The observatory is equipped with a telescope with a mirror diameter of 2.5 meters and has the characteristics of no worse than the largest observatories in the world, such as Paranal in Chile or Mauna Kea in Hawaii, explained in the press service of the Moscow State University. In modern Russia, this class telescopes are only two observatories: the Crimean Astrophysical and the Special Astrophysical also located in the KCR.

According to scientists, in the Mount Shatzhatmaz about 180 clear nights per year. This is a very high figure for natural conditions of our country. In addition, the region is very high transparency of the atmosphere, making the observatory unique object.

The telescope was made by a team from different countries. The Russian side is the customer directly and built an observatory.

According to the scientists of Moscow State University, built facility will open new possibilities in the training of students, scientific work and help in the expansion of international contacts.
