Barack Obama has asked Congress for funds to fight the Zika virus – REGNUM

Washington, February 9, 2016, 07:29 – REGNUM US President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $ 1.8 billion in funding for emergency measures to combat the virus and spread it Zika mosquitoes, reports Associated Press.

Most of the funds will go to research, training and the formation of rapid response teams. About $ 250 million will be spent in Puerto Rico, $ 200 million will be spent on research and commercial use of new vaccines and diagnostic methods.

The remaining funds in the amount of $ 335 million will be transferred to the US Agency for International Development, which helps affected countries to train medical personnel to encourage private research and provides access for pregnant women to repellents to protect against mosquitoes.

The official US health officials say that the funding is very important for the study of the possible effects of a virus disease Zika, namely the emergence of microcephaly in infants.
