The official representative of the Investigative Committee of Russia (MRS) Vladimir Markin said that in order to conduct additional research at the request of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in the framework of a renewed criminal investigation of the death of a family member of the Russian Imperial House of Romanov was conducted exhumation of the remains of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. It is noted that the samples had not previously been studied. In addition, the State Hermitage Museum were traces of blood samples taken from the clothes of the Emperor Alexander II. Was conducted genetic analysis of DNA inherited through the female line (mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)).

«Analysis of the most informative parts of mtDNA, obtained in the study of samples taken September 23, 2015 from jaw and vertebra of the emperor, has shown that they coincide with the data obtained earlier in the study of Nicholas II shirt with traces of his blood, and the previously established mitochondrial sequences from other specimens of the skeleton. These samples revealed heteroplasmy (differences in DNA sequences in organelles (in this case – in the mitochondria) of the body, one of the reasons may serve as a transfer of part of the mtDNA paternal linii.- “b” ) – a rare genetic mutation was present in samples of Nicholas II », – said Mr. Markin. He noted that the primary genetic analysis has revealed areas of mtDNA, coinciding with the options from the descendants of Queen Victoria of Great Britain on the maternal line, whose descendant was the Empress.
