The money collected by the charity flashmob Ice Bucket Challenge, provided funding for the research and helped scientists discover NEK1 gene associated with the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The report on this work was published in the journal Nature Genetics.
The new gene is discovered research group Project MinE after a comparative analysis of the genomes of more than 15 thousand people who have died due to the disease and their healthy relatives. The results of research experts will contribute to the development of group therapy for people with ALS and early diagnosis of the disease.
Flashmob Ice Bucket Challenge ( “the test of a bucket of ice water”) was held in 2014. Its members doused himself with cold water and laid out the video social network, passing the baton to his friends. Flashmob was supported by many celebrities, including the founder of social network Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, former US President George W. ALS is a rare disease and affects the upper and lower motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord that are responsible for the coordination. The disease develops slowly, but it is considered incurable. It leads to paralysis and atrophy of the muscles.
