In the depths of Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world, Russian scientists have discovered a new species of amphipod crustaceans, further investigated with the assistance of their colleagues from Ukraine and Germany, reports “Times” with reference to the journal Zootaxa.
Baikal amphipod crustaceans: Pallacea cancelloides , Eulimnogammarus cyaneus and a new kind of Eulimnogammarus messerschmidtii (orange)
The discovery was made during an international expedition, performed in framework of the joint Russian-German project Research Institute of Biology, Irkutsk State University and the German Center for Environmental Research Helmholtz. Young scientist ISU Daria Bedulina and its German counterpart, Till Lyukenbah from the group found crustaceans amphipods, previously unknown to science. The discovery was made in the northern part of Lake Baikal, near the mouth of the river Tyya.
Crustaceans, resembling shrimp, play a crucial role in the Lake Baikal, being, in fact, one of the key elements of the entire ecosystem of the lake. Baikal them open more than 350 species ?? the largest group of organisms in the lake, fully represented species endemic, that is the unique species found only in Lake Baikal. Most of the endemic species are extremely sensitive to changes in habitat and primarily to the temperature regime.
New amphipod Eulimnogammarus messerschmidtii (eulimnogammarus Messerschmidt) in honor of Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt ?? the first explorer of Siberia and one of the first members of the Russian (St. Petersburg) Academy of Sciences. He was invited from Germany Peter I and made a long journey in a completely unknown edge.
