Research at the Institute of Applied Mathematics. MV Keldysh, Leonid Elenin discovered a new asteroid.
The discovery was made on June 14 according to the 40-centimeter optical telescope, which is located in the state of New Mexico (USA). Recall that the telescope is part of a scientific network of optical instruments Russia for astrometric and photometric observations. Outdoor asteroid received the designation “2015 LK24». Its size is presumably between 86 and 270 meters. It is assumed that the morning of June 26 the asteroid will pass at a distance of 4.7 million kilometers from our planet. The dimensions and the flight path, allow to carry a celestial body as hazardous for Earth cosmic objects.
Recall that the category includes all potentially dangerous asteroids with a diameter of more than 100 meters and extending for a distance of 0.05 astronomical units ( 7.5 million kilometers) from Earth.
Thanks to the discovery of cosmic “guest” on the distant frontiers, astronomers will be able to watch it at the time of closest approach to the Earth and to specify its size and trajectory.
Unfortunately, to see it with the naked eye does not succeed, because at the moment of closest approach, its brightness is low for this (to match the brightness of the stars of the 17th magnitude).
It is now known that the orbital period of an asteroid in 2015 LK24 in the solar system is about five years. Its trajectory has an elongated shape, the approaching celestial body to the sun, then returning it to the orbit of Jupiter.
