The Russian scientist-astronomer at the Institute of Applied Mathematics Keldysh, Leonid Elenin discovered a new asteroid, which in the future could be a danger to life on Earth. According to the calculations of mathematics, June 26 asteroid, designated 2015 LK24 registry Minor Planet Center, will take place from the Earth at a distance of 4.7 million kilometers.
The size of the asteroid in diameter about 160 meters. Despite the apparent “modesty” in size, in a collision with the Earth’s surface it is able to trigger a global catastrophe.
«At the time of closest approach (June 26 – Ed.) To reach the brightness of the entire 17th star value and therefore it will not be discernible to the naked eye … the asteroid’s trajectory changes under the influence of the planets near which they pass. Circulation period of the asteroid 2015 lk24 in the Solar System – about 5 years. He travels on an elongated orbit, it approaches the Sun, reaching the orbit of Jupiter. While we do not know – whether the asteroid closer to or farther away from the Earth in subsequent encounters », – Elenin told about his discovery.
The discovery was made on June 14 for remote analysis of data with a 40-centimeter optical telescope, located in the state of New Mexico (USA). This telescope is part of the Russian scientific network of optical instruments for astrometric and photometric observations (ISON, international name – ISON).
An asteroid the size of 86 to 270 meters (an average of about 160-minute) was designated in 2015 LK24 . On the morning of June 26 a celestial body will pass at a distance of 4.7 million kilometers from Earth. To see it with the naked eye will not work – at the time of closest approach in all its brightness reaches 17th magnitude. However, the new heavenly body is related to potentially dangerous.
