Modular Project Ara phone from Google had to go on sale in the near future, but the company decided to postpone its exit to 2016 . “Times” considered at what stage is the project.
Google Project Ara – today one of the most interesting projects in the IT-sector, as the company intends to release the first ever modular smartphone , the various components which can be rearranged and changed places.
The idea of a modular phone is extremely simple. Firstly, it will in future update individual components of the device without having to buy a new smartphone. For example, if the user suddenly needs a powerful camera phone, you can simply buy a new camera and insert it into the already existing device.
Secondly, it could reduce the cost of repairs in case of failure of a separate component, as users no longer need to go to the service center and give the money for the work.
Finally, the modularity allows to create a truly unique device, sharpened to a specific user. For example, a fan of mobile games can deliver a powerful processor, accelerator and capacious battery. At the same time the adept social networking seamlessly put together a good video card camera to collect a large number of likes to Instagram.
However, the creation of such an architecture has caused a large number of difficulties because before this technology simply did not exist, and companies need to reinvent from scratch or another technical solution.
In this regard, Google has decided to postpone the release of the smartphone until 2016, saying that they need to carry out more tests construction than expected. However, it can also mean something, and that Google will have more time to create new modules.
The pilot edition of the product consists not in Puerto Rico, as originally planned. The company is currently looking for a new place where the trial will take place on the start of sales of the device, the final stage of testing Project Ara – is already in the hands of ordinary users.
However, the smartphone is already working. His demonstration was held in the framework of Google I / O in May 2015, when the company not only included it in front of an enthusiastic audience, but also to replace one of its components without shutting down. Therefore we can say that in general, with the construction of Ara in Google have figured out, and now it is setting up the device for daily use.
But questions remain. For example, it is unclear exactly how the modules of the smartphone will be held in the case and whether there will be a little loose slots quickly.
It would be unpleasant in violent phone conversation suddenly lost, for example, a processor that just flew of its groove due to the weakness of fastenings.
In addition, it is unknown how the distribution of the components to be produced. Google announced the creation of a separate store components on which they can be ordered, but it is unlikely that the store will be able to deliver the items to worldwide. Most likely, they will initially be available only in a limited number of countries.
The third question – is the production of the components themselves. It is impossible to say with certainty whether independent developers to produce their modules, or it will be the prerogative of the Google. In this case, a set of these modules can get very limited in some way to bury all the charm of a modular concept.
If Google allow everyone to create their own components, then it is unclear how the company will verify the compatibility of the modules together.
For example, it is possible that the battery is one of the company due to the nature of code will cause an error camera from another manufacturer.
Finally, It remains an open question, and security components. If the items will be able to create any, that it will not fail to take advantage of the attackers, who surely will release their own modules with built-in malware. For example, if a user installs, for example, a new audio jack produced by hackers, they can get access to all the data on his smartphone by viruses in the component controller.
