A team of six persons will one year in complete isolation from the outside world in a special complex on the slopes of a dormant volcano Mauna Loa. The size of the dome under which the participants will stay the experiment – 11 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height.
As part of the experimental team of three men and three women – French astrobiologist, German physicist and four Americans – a pilot, architect , a doctor and a soil scientist.

Participants will experiment for a year to live without fresh air, freshly prepared food in isolated areas. From the food they have, inter alia, have powdered cheese and canned tuna.
According to the conditions of the experiment, the team members will have to go outside only in suits.
The experiment started on Friday at 3 pm local time.

The US space agency had already twice conducted similar experiments: they lasted four and eight months. The current experiment will be the longest in time and be as close to the real conditions of a flight to Mars.
