The growth of women directly affects how long it will last her pregnancy, researchers found. Department of Science “Gazety.Ru” tells the story of a woman of growth are at risk, and explains what it is connected.
According to the statistics from the World Health Organization Every year around the world prematurely (at less than 37 weeks) born about 15 million children, 1.1 million of whom die. It was a premature birth of a major cause of death in children in the first four weeks of life, and the second after pneumonia – cause of death in children under five years.
Depending on the country indicators of preterm birth range from 5 to 18% of the number of children ever born ,
in Russia this figure, according to experts, over the past few years has decreased from 10 to 7%.
The causes of preterm birth can be many: inadequate intake of a pregnant woman vitamins and nutrients, infectious diseases, injuries, chronic stress.
For many years, scientists are engaged in research and other “internal” factors that can trigger premature labor: such are, for example, mother’s age, her weight, and, as recently revealed, even growth.
The article, which the authors found a correlation between the growth of the parents and the duration of pregnancy, came in 2013, in the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth . A group of researchers led by Kirsty Mikelstad from Norwegian University of Science and Technology collected data on 3497 women during pregnancy who gave birth to 5010 children, as well as the physical condition of men in 2005, became fathers in 2798 infants.
Researchers have not been able to identify the relationship between the growth of the father and the duration of the pregnancy of his wife. But in the case of women the situation was different: it turned out that
lady of small stature (as scientists refer to them mothers shorter than 163 cm) had a much higher risk to have a baby ahead of time, ie until the end of the 37th week of pregnancy. On the contrary, women are more likely to see higher than 173 others gave birth later than expected.
In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday of the journal PLoS Medicine published an article explaining the results of the research of an international group of scientists led by Professor Zhang Ge Medical Center Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati. The study involved nearly 3,485 women living in Norway, Denmark and Finland, as well as their children. The authors of the study not only figured out how to correlate the growth of the mother with the duration of pregnancy, but also conducted genetic analysis of all subjects in order to understand which genes affect the period of gestation, and his physical condition at birth.
As a result of the work it became clear that the growth of the mother affects the growth and weight of the baby at birth. A role – albeit smaller – in the formation of “parameters” of the child was playing well and the growth of his father. The study’s authors argue that they were able to highlight
697 single nucleotide polymorphisms (differences in size of DNA sequences in a single nucleotide) which are associated with the growth of parental and affect the growth and weight of their children.
With regard to the timing of childbearing, the researchers were able to confirm the conclusions of their Norwegian colleagues: a small increase women really contributes to an earlier leave. Unfortunately, the explanation for these observations, the authors nor their current study, no study until 2013, can not give, and all their findings are confirmed by the statistical data only. It is possible that the culprit certain genes, the functions of which are still unknown to researchers. As another hypothesis the researchers call the fact that
in the body of low women may experience disturbances in the formation of intrauterine environment, and this, in turn, negatively affects the condition of the fetus.
Luis Mugla, one of the study’s authors, comments: “Our work shows that the duration of a woman’s pregnancy depends on its growth. An explanation of why this is the case, we have: we can assume that the blame genetics, but you can – that play a role external factors, such as diet or living conditions. ” “Our work certainly contributed to the understanding of why the case of premature childbirth,” – adds the researcher Jennifer House.
However, there are other scientists identified the relationship between the growth of a woman and during her pregnancy, which is no explanation. These facts include, for example, the following observation: the ladies, whose growth exceeds 174 cm, are much more likely to give birth to twins. Such conclusions were made on the basis of observations of 6589 women, about which scientists reported in 2011 at a conference European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology 27th Annual Meeting .
