Scientists: Mars River pebbles transferred tens of kilometers

Planetary scientists have found that on Mars in the past ran wild rivers.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania decided to study the images of stones, similar to river pebbles which got rover Curiosity on the way to Mount Sharp. Photographed stones have a circular shape and are smooth as river pebbles.

The researchers tried to calculate how large the stones turn into pebbles. To do this, they went on an expedition to a mountain river in Puerto Rico. By collecting various stones across the river, they amounted to a formula which can calculate the entire history of turning stones into pebbles, and the distance that it has passed.

Applying them to the Martian images, planetary scientists have found that the stones found Mars, lost about 20% of its volume. They went with the waters of the rivers of 30-50 kilometers. Comparing these data with maps of Mars, scientists have discovered that the source of the stones was found the edge of the crater Gale, which is 50 km from the place of their discovery. This supports the hypothesis that in the past flowed on Mars turbulent fast flowing rivers.
