Half of Russians agree to censor the Internet, the survey showed – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, August 3 – RIA Novosti. More than half of Russians support the complete shutdown of the Internet in Russia, according to the report, “What society wants: the desire of Russians to control the Internet,” based on a study prepared by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) and the Center for the Study of global communications at the School of Communications Annenbergskoy University of Pennsylvania (USA).

For example, about half of the respondents (49%) believe that the information on the Internet should be subject to censorship. At the same time 58% support a complete shutdown of the Internet in the State in the case of national threat or the possibility of mass protests, while 73% believe that the network is not necessary to publish negative information about state employees.

About 42% of Russians believe that foreign States use the Internet to harm Russia and its interests. And 79% of respondents have a negative attitude to websites and groups in social networks, organizing protest marches and demonstrations against the government.

The survey data show that regular users of the Internet are 42% of Russian citizens. At the same time 53% said the positive impact of the World Wide Web on a person’s life, and a third – of its shortcomings.

Most of the Internet users are young and well educated, 59% of them under the age of 34 years, about half of them have higher education. Do not use the Internet mostly older people without higher education, the report said.
