The representation of the human justice was easy corrected: magnetic stimulation of certain areas of the brain can change our perception of the degree of guilt of the person in that person’s conduct.

It is known that the decision on punishment, it is necessary to understand the severity of the fault of the person and to assess the severity of the consequences of misconduct. The question is how our brain performs these processes, a long time did not have an answer.

The most suitable for this function, according to scientists, it is the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. It has a rather complex cellular structure and a large number of neuronal connections with other parts of the nervous system that allows it to combine different streams of information and respond on the basis of multiple source data. Studies have confirmed that the region of the brain performs just such a role in the solution of cognitive tasks (non-social interaction). Also it found to be “turned on” in making decisions based on the norms of morality or the law of the society to which the person belongs.

However, until now it was unclear what role played by this area in determining the degree of fault man and his sentencing.

A team of American scientists of the Faculty of Psychology at Harvard University, under the leadership of Joshua Bakholttsa found the answer to this question. Studies have confirmed that the dorsolateral prefrontal area is really combines two streams of information (the degree of guilt and the severity of the offense) and then imposed a sentence.

At the same time it was found that these processes can be very easy to manage. This was confirmed by an experiment in which one group was exposed to transcranial magnetic stimulation this region of the brain. As a result, these people are taken more lenient punishment, although an opinion about the degree of culpability, “the defendant” has not changed.

The researchers hope that the study “will help build a framework for a better understanding of the causes of bias and its removal».
