Sulawesi found ancient rock carvings person – DELFI.lv

Age rock paintings in the caves of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi estimated at least 40,000 years – that is, they appeared at about the same time as the ancient primitive art in Western Europe. The results of the study are presented in the journal Nature.

On the rock carvings in karst caves Maros (South Sulawesi), scientists have learned more in the 1950s. Then they were given a maximum of 10 thousand years it was believed that in a tropical climate erosion destroy older image.

But Maxim Aubert and his colleagues dated dripstones in Figures uranium-thorium method and found the exact chronological framework of their creation. A hand was written at least 39.9 thousand years ago, a local pig species babirussa – between 35.4 and 35.7 thousand years ago.

For comparison, the oldest European artwork (red disk of the cave of El Castillo) was created 40800 years ago, and the first figurative painting (rhino Chauvet cave) – 35-38 thousand years ago.

The simultaneous occurrence of primitive art on the far fringes of the Eurasian Pleistocene raises new questions for anthropologists. It is unclear whether cultural innovation came with the waves of the Cro-Magnons who came to Europe and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, or the art has evolved independently in different regions.

Opening Aubert emphasizes the importance of the Asian continent for the study of human evolution, say scientists . It is here found mysterious denisovtsev and femur Homo sapiens age of 45 thousand years, from which extracted ancient DNA species.

Even the history of the Neanderthals, known on the European findings are likely to represent several waves of migration of these Homininae of Central and West Asia. Finally, just 400 kilometers south of the Maros caves on the island of Flores, were found the remains of “human-hobbit”.
