In Egypt, we found a huge ancient necropolis – Lenta.ru

On the banks of the Nile, archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown necropolis of 42 graves carved into the rock and the sanctuary. Thus, a complex of Gebel el Sils was not just a quarry, a densely populated city. Age burials is estimated at 3400 years. On the opening of reports Live Science.

Initially, al-Silsilah considered labor camp, where the workers, mining sandstone quarries lived. Then there found six statues, and finally at the end of the spring 2016 field season, the Western and Egyptian archaeologists have announced the discovery of burials 18-19 Dynasty (New Kingdom).

To get access to the graves of scientists had to clear them from the Nile silt that covered them for centuries. One of the graves appeared sanctuary. Despite all the damage caused by water and wind, can be seen on the stone image of the solar disk with wings (the sacred symbol).

The remaining burials were plundered in ancient times. They were only the bones and numerous articles funerary ceramics (mugs, jugs, bowls). Ring with a name of Pharaoh Thutmose III of, found in one of the graves, brought scientists to the idea that al-Silsilah lived not only ordinary workers.

In the coming years, archaeologists hope to find the names of the buried on the banks of the Nile, as well as find out what the ancient city served by the necropolis.
