Megalodon, which represent a huge shark 18 meters long, lived on our planet some 2.6 million years ago . The main reasons for their extinction were considered climatic changes and other natural phenomena that led to global cooling. Recently, however, the Swiss biologists, studying all the Megalodon remains, which could be found in the oceans of our planet, found that basking sharks were killed not because of the climate, and due to the rapid decline of species diversity of the victims and the emergence of new predators and competitors.
In his research, paleontologists have not found any connection between climate change and the reduction of the number of Megalodon, as they have for several tens of millions of years existed in both warm and cold periods. At the same time, scientists have paid attention to other marine species, especially mammals, which served as food for the Megalodon. The number of these species declined rapidly with time, while there were new predators – ancestors of modern whales and white sharks, which further reduced the food resources Megalodon.
