Robot helped figure out how to move animals 360 million years ago – Armenian News – NEWS.am

Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Clemson University and Carnegie -Mellona established that movement of the earliest land animals on the sand and mud 360 million years ago, it was possible by the powerful tail, like a fish. The study is published in the journal Science, and briefly about the results reported by RNS.

Scientists have studied in detail the African fish called mudskipper and developed a model of the robot. Also, the authors investigated the current and resistance conditions granular materials and created on the basis of the mathematical model of the data.

«Most robots have problems when moving to the area, which consisted of sandy slopes. Our robot can climb sand slopes only when used together with the tail of the limbs, “- says physicist at the Georgia Institute Dan Goldman. And mudskipper, and the robot is lifted by placing themselves in order to reduce drag, falling on their body. To overcome the sandy slope at an angle of 20 degrees, they need a tail push. Scientists believe that the earliest land animals probably could not fully control his limbs, and the tail is compensated for this limitation and helped them to climb the sandy slopes.

The research results will help scientists to develop robots that can navigate on plastic and flowing surfaces and in understanding how vertebrates came from the water onto land in the course of evolution.
