DIMITROVGRAD (Ulyanovsk region), September 11 – RIA Novosti. The world’s largest multi-purpose research reactor on fast neutrons MBIR, which began to build in Russia will significantly in three or four times, reduce the time of development of new fuels and structural materials needed for the global nuclear energy future, said deputy general director of the state corporation “Rosatom” – the director of the Block Management Innovation Vyacheslav Pershukov.

The ceremony of pouring of the first concrete in the foundation of the basement of the main building of the reactor MBIR took place on Friday at the site of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation “Research Institute of Atomic Reactors” (Atomic Reactors, is a control loop Rosatom JSC “Science and Innovation”). The project is implemented within the framework of the federal target program “Nuclear Power Technologies of New Generation in 2010-2015 and until 2020″. Entering the reactor in operation is scheduled for 2020.

MBIR become the most powerful of the existing, under construction and planned research reactors in the world. The heat capacity of the new reactor with sodium coolant will be 150 MW. Unique characteristics MBIR will allow to solve a wide range of research tasks in support of the creation of new competitive and safe nuclear power plants, including fast neutron reactors to close the nuclear fuel cycle.

Accelerate Research

“Such systems have not been. This reactor for peaceful nuclear energy of the future. It will at times reduce the time of research into new materials and fuel,” – said Pershukov at the ceremony.

“The greater the power of the reactor, the faster you can get results. If you use a standard low-power reactors operating in the world today, the investigations will take decades. The reactor MBIR allows 3-4 times to reduce this period, “- said the deputy head of Rosatom.

On the basis of the new reactor is planned to create International Research Center.

“We expect a large number of foreign scientists, technology companies that will work here. We have already held preliminary discussions with technology companies, large research centers. They are all interested in conducting research on new reactor “- said Pershukov.

The international nature of the project MBIR confronts Russian nuclear specific tasks for the construction and operation of the reactor, he said.

” We have to prove to the world that Russia’s nuclear industry is the engine of technological development of the industry “- said Pershukov.

Commercial version

According to the deputy head of Rosatom, the construction of the reactor MBIR has two main stage.

“The first part – it is the” nuclear island “, which allocated money from the federal program, it cost about 13 billion rubles,” – said Pershukov.

The second part deals with the construction of research infrastructure. “This is about 25-30 billion rubles,” – added Pershukov.

The structure of the project is MBIR, which allows us to form its commercial use, he said.
