Scientists from the Netherlands and Canada have come to the conclusion that the only way to avoid a hangover – drink less.
The researchers interviewed more than 800 students on how they are trying to get rid of the symptoms of a hangover. Some drink water before going to sleep, while others prefer something to eat.
It turned out that neither the one nor the other, does not bring any results.
Of the 826 Dutch students 54 % said they prefer anything to eat after they drank a lot, and usually eat anything fatty or before going to bed or at breakfast.
Two-thirds of drinking water with alcohol, and the majority of drinks a glass of water before going to bed.
While all of these people feel a little better than those who did not take any measures against the coming hangover, there was no real difference in the severity of the hangover.
Previous studies have shown that about 25% of drinkers claim that he never suffered from a hangover.
The water does not help
The researchers interviewed 789 Canadian students about how much they drank alcohol in the last month, and how heavy was their hangovers. It turned out that those who say they do not suffer from a hangover, in fact, simply not drink a lot.
When the concentration of alcohol in the blood of more than 0.2% of a hangover the next morning could not be avoided virtually anyone.
According to Dr. Joris Forster from the University of Utrecht, the reason is simple: “The more you drink, the more likely a hangover the next day “.
” The water can quench your thirst and help get rid of the dryness in your mouth, but it will not help get rid of headaches, nausea and poor health, “- he added.
He also stressed that the amount of alcohol that can cause a hangover in the morning for each person individually.
The mystery of nature
The problem among other things, is that science still does not know the causes of a hangover, says Dr. Foerster.
“The researchers concluded that the reason lies not in dehydration. We know that in these cases the immune system. But as long as we do not understand the reasons for [hangover], we can not treat it, “- said Dr. Foerster.
And Dr. Michael Bloomfield, of University College London points out that alcohol abuse brings billions in losses the economy .
“This implies that we need an answer to a simple question: how to avoid a hangover?” – he said.
“Although additional studies are needed, it is clear that the answer to this the question is also simple – should drink less “.
The results of the Dutch-Canadian study were presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology conference.
