Astronomers have discovered galaktiku- “Frankenstein” in the cosmic desert – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, July 12 – RIA Novosti. The researchers found in a deserted corner of the space 250 million light-years from Earth, the galaxy is extremely unusual, whose margins are old, and the kernel – the young, which makes it a cosmic analogue Frankenstein’s monster, according to a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal.

“the central part of UGC 1382 is actually younger than the spiral disk surrounding it. This finding is similar to, if botanists found a tree whose inner rings would have been younger than rings in the outer layers, “- said Mark clintonite (Mark Seibert) of the Observatory of the Carnegie Institute of science in Pasadena (USA)

clintonite and his colleagues made the discovery, retrain an ordinary elliptical galaxy UGC. 1382 in a unique class of cosmic “Frankenstein” by studying the data collected by the probe GALEX, designed to study the evolution of galaxies and orbital and ground-based telescopes the WISE, Sloan view of the sky and micron review 2MASS sky.

By studying pictures UGC 1382 scientists accidentally discovered that this “small” galaxies have extremely long and almost invisible sleeve whose length exceeds 718 000 light-years. In other words, it turns out that the UGC in 1382 among the three most isolated large galaxies in the visible universe is about five times larger than the Milky Way by its dimensions.

These sleeves barely contain stars, and about 70% are made up of dark matter, and the rest of the weight falls on the clouds of neutral gas and dust. Since the density of the gas is very low, we almost do not see this galaxy due to the fact that the stars in it are formed are extremely reluctant, despite the large number of “star of building materials”.

The stars in it are born very strange way – generally, burst of star formation in the galaxies are from their center to the outskirts, and in the UGC 1382, everything happens on the contrary – the old stars are concentrated at the edges, and the new – for the most part in the center. This structure makes this galaxy in space “Frankenstein’s monster”, made up of disparate and overlapping elements connected with each other unnatural way.

As the authors suggest, the UGC in 1382 arose as a result of the collision and “bonding” multiple dwarf galaxies merged into one several billion years ago. Such a scenario could explain the unusual shape of this galaxy and why the stars in it are born “topsy-turvy”.

According to clintonite and his colleagues, the UGC 1382 is not a unique facility of this kind, and that similar ” star family “, which scientists call GLSB-galaxies may occur in other parts of the cosmos. Their discovery and study can help astrophysicists reveal the mechanisms of birth of such cosmic “Frankenstein” and the role that education plays in their dark matter.
