NASA specialists staged in Earth orbit is the largest fire in the entire history of Astronautics. Dilute fire in weightlessness, scientists have decided for the sake of research and torched undocked from the ISS truck Cygnus.
According to Space.com portal, an unusual space experiment, called Saffire-1, NASA engineers began remotely Incandescent wire aboard the Cygnus space truck, which the day before undocked from the ISS. The fire quickly spread to a piece of fabric steklohlopkovoy meter long and 40 centimeters wide.
As noted by representatives of NASA, the scientists used very small pieces of burned paper and tissue in space whose dimensions are comparable with a credit card. The new “mega-fire” was a success and was able to achieve ultra-high combustion temperatures. In total, burning Cygnus flew about three kilometers up until the tissue is not burned completely.
Experiment Saffire need for a better understanding of how fire behaves in space. Scientists hope that a detailed study of this fire will help engineers design effective extinguishing system in space, it is vitally necessary to send humans to Mars and other planets.
Note that the most famous fire in the history of manned space flight was a fire that happened on board the space station “Mir” February 23, 1997.
