Amateur astronomer took video of the collision of a comet with Jupiter – RIA News

MOSCOW, March 30 – RIA Novosti . Austrian amateur astronomer Gerrit Kernbauer posted a video which can be seen as a bright object, presumably a comet or an asteroid crashes into Jupiter, which he first published in the German forum AstroTreff.de amateur astronomy.

amateur astronomers often watching the giant planets and Mars, recording their observations on the video camera connected to the telescope. Comparison of different frames received at the same time, allows you to significantly improve the clarity of images, “removing” them from dust particles and other traces of the Earth’s atmosphere.

conducting a similar operation on March 17, Gerrit Kernbauer made an unexpected discovery. Around midnight GMT, he witnessed how bright object crashed into the right half of the Jupiter, creating a small flash, noticeable even in a simple amateur telescope with a diameter of 20 centimeters.

Initially Kernbauer doubted that he could actually see the collision of Jupiter with a comet or asteroid, but later a similar photos and videos have been published by the Irish astronomer John McKeon (John McKeon). This confirmed that the Australian saw “cosmic accident” rather than flare or some phenomenon that occurred in the Earth’s atmosphere.

According to astronomer Phil Plait (Phil Plait), author of the popular blog Bad Astronomy, the size of this objects were small – a few tens of meters. According to him, has become a bright flash thanks to the powerful pull of Jupiter and the high speed of the object.

Such events are not uncommon for giant planet, it regularly cuts a lot of asteroids. Almost every year, astronomers are fixed on the surface of powerful flares that occur during collisions of small celestial bodies with the Jovian atmosphere.
