Scientists from the Institute of Technology of New Jersey, discovered a new species of fish that can move on land using their legs as fins. The results of the study can be found in the journal Scientific Reports .

A team of US scientists led by Brooke Flemming discovered in northern Thailand fish Cryptotora thamicola , which was called “cave angel.” According to the researchers, it uses the pectoral and pelvic fins to climb up on the rocks, both in water and on land. Scientists point out that fish have fins, “legs” were found in the past, but, unlike Cryptotora thamicola , they could “walk” along the bottom only in an aqueous medium that can support their body. Cryptotora thamicola refers to the so-called fish lungfish, having both gill and lung breathing: the swim bladder is fit to breathe atmospheric air and is used as a light.

This study will help in the future to understand how have evolved limb of the first land animals, allowing them to subsequently move on the ground
