Washington, March 1, 2016, 08:24 – REGNUM American scientists from the University of California at Santa Barbara had a cross-cultural study to elucidate the nature of shame, as it appeared, and why we need it, according to the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Scientists have put forward the hypothesis that the sense of shame helps maintain and build relationships in the group and thus contributes to the survival of people.
900 people from India, Israel and the United States participated in the survey, aimed at clarifying their relationship to human behavior and themselves in different situations. They found that people are equally averse to the shameful acts committed both by themselves and others.
Despite the fact that the ratio of condemnation and shame in different societies may vary, the researchers came to the conclusion that there are some “universal” negative features, the manifestation of which is a person of any society shame. In the US, India and Israel, people are equally shameful believe greed, lack of ambition and infidelity.
The researchers concluded that a sense of shame to develop in a person in the course of evolution, as a necessary quality to preserve the social fabric of society and the motivation to improve relations with others.
In ancient times, it was the key to the physical survival of the person.
