Surgeons in South Africa had the world’s first successful transplant of the male sexual organ.

The operation took place in December at a hospital in Cape Town, with the participation of experts from the University of Stellenbosch, but only now the results were found to be successful ..

The operation to transplant donor organ lasted 9:00.

Doctors say the 21-year-old patient, who is not named on ethical grounds, fully recovered.

He lost his genital organ at age 18 as a result of infection after circumcision. This procedure is part of the ritual of initiation of boys into men in some parts of South Africa.

Attempts to transplant physicians genitals were made in the past, particularly in China. Then, too, reported a successful operation, but the body does not get accustomed over time.

Professor Andre van der Merwe, one of the surgeons who performed the operation, said in an interview with BBC BBC that the operation is much more complicated kidney transplant , where he worked previously.

To connect the finest blood vessels and nerves, doctors have used a technique that is commonly used in plastic surgery for operations on the face.

Doctors also noted that the operation was preceded lengthy discussion about the ethics of it, as opposed to, say, a heart transplant, it does not aim to saving lives.
